SK Hynix, a key player in the global semiconductor market, reported record-breaking second-quarter earnings on July 29, 2026. Revenue surged to 79.32 trillion Korean Won (KRW), marking a substantial 257% increase year-over-year and a 51% jump from the previous quarter. Operating profit also saw a dramatic rise, reaching 60.54 trillion KRW, a 557% increase year-over-year and a 61% increase quarter-over-quarter. This performance was largely propelled by the escalating demand for advanced memory chips essential for artificial intelligence applications.
However, despite these record figures, SK Hynix's results fell short of analyst expectations. Revenue was approximately 5% below the consensus forecast of 84 trillion KRW, and operating profit missed the LSEG SmartEstimate by a similar margin, coming in below the expected 64 trillion KRW. This discrepancy led to a sharp decline in the company's stock, with shares plummeting by as much as 10% in trading. Market analysts point to several factors contributing to this reaction, including concerns about the sustainability of aggressive AI infrastructure spending by major tech firms and SK Hynix's specific product mix, which may have benefited less from overall memory price rallies compared to some competitors.
The company is actively working to navigate these market dynamics. SK Hynix is seeking to secure more long-term supply agreements to mitigate the inherent volatility of the memory market and plans to increase capital spending to expand production capacity. While demand for AI memory chips remains strong, with major customers continuing to request increased supply, investors are closely watching for detailed plans regarding shareholder returns and the long-term viability of the current AI boom.
