Xos Stock Skyrockets on Major U.S. Air Force Contract

Share:

Xos Inc. shares experienced a remarkable surge of approximately 120% in pre-market trading Tuesday, propelled by the news of a significant contract award from the U. S. Air Force. The electric commercial vehicle and energy infrastructure company announced it has secured a prototype Other Transaction Agreement to develop and deliver a deployable mobile charging solution for electrified support equipment and vehicles. This marks Xos's first foray into the defense market, a development that has sent investor enthusiasm soaring.

The contract was awarded through the Air Force Global Strike Command Rapid Capabilities Division 2026 Showcase, a program designed to evaluate and deploy emerging commercial technologies. Under the agreement, Xos will adapt its Xos Hub mobile battery energy storage system for defense applications. This system is capable of providing high-capacity, grid-independent charging without the need for permanent infrastructure, a feature deemed critical for field operations. Assembly and integration of the system will take place at Xos's facility in Byrdstown, Tennessee, with the period of performance extending into late 2027.

Dakota Semler, CEO of Xos, hailed the award as a "strategic inflection point" for the company. He emphasized that the U. S. Air Force's selection validates the company's vision of a mobile energy platform proven in commercial operations that can meet demanding mission requirements. The Xos Hub has previously been deployed across commercial fleets, ports, and municipalities, showcasing its versatility and reliability. This defense contract opens up a significant new addressable market for Xos, aligning with the broader trend of increasing electrification within military operations. The U. S. Army, for instance, has committed to fielding microgrids at every installation and an all-electric non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2035.

While recent quarterly earnings reports showed revenue shortfalls and increased losses, the news of this substantial defense contract injects significant optimism into Xos's future prospects. The company has been working to pivot towards higher-margin powertrain and Hub products, and this defense win could accelerate that strategy. The stock's significant jump underscores the market's positive reaction to Xos's successful entry into the high-stakes defense sector.
