US Stocks Climb as Geopolitical Tensions Subside

Share:

U. S. stocks exhibited a broad-based advance, with major indices trending upward as fears of escalating international conflict diminished. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 139.02 points, a 0.27% increase, closing at 52487.41. The S&P 500 saw a more substantial rise, adding 60.93 points, or 0.81%, to reach 7543.64, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.3%, closing at 26206.89.

The market's upward trajectory was bolstered by a cooling of tensions between the United States and Iran. Following earlier exchanges, a sense of de-escalation emerged, leading to a decrease in oil prices. U. S. crude futures lost $1.44, settling at $72.08 a barrel, down from earlier highs that had tested the $76 mark amid concerns over tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf. This moderation in oil prices also eased inflation expectations among bond traders, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note falling by 0.030 percentage point to 4.539%.

The shift in geopolitical sentiment provided a tailwind for various sectors. Semiconductor stocks, which had experienced recent declines, saw a resurgence as investors recognized the underlying strength in demand, particularly related to artificial intelligence investments. Companies like Broadcom saw gains, boosted by a new supply deal with Apple. However, not all sectors benefited equally, as PepsiCo's shares fell 3.25% to $137.86, with the company citing the impact of war-related gasoline price spikes on discretionary consumer spending during the latest quarter. The easing of war jitters also supported a weaker U. S. dollar, which in turn provided a lift to precious metals, with gold futures rising 1.5% to $4130.60 per troy ounce.
