Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire Amid Stalled Peace Talks

Share:

President Donald Trump announced today that he would extend the ceasefire with Iran, hours before it was set to expire. This decision comes as talks between U. S. and Iranian delegations in Islamabad, Pakistan, have been postponed amid uncertainty about the direction of a potential agreement. Trump stated that the extension is intended to allow Iran to formulate a unified proposal to end the conflict.

Despite extending the ceasefire, the U. S. will maintain its naval blockade on Iranian ports. Trump said he directed the U. S. military to "hold" an attack on Iran but ordered forces to continue the blockade and "in all other respects, remain ready and able" to act. The U. S. imposed the blockade to pressure Tehran into ending its control of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane.

Iran has yet to confirm its attendance at the Islamabad talks, with officials warning they are prepared to unveil "new cards on the battlefield". Before announcing the ceasefire extension, Trump had warned that "lots of bombs" would "start going off" if no agreement was reached. A senior commander in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps threatened to destroy the region's oil industry if war with the U. S. resumes.

The extension comes at the request of Pakistani officials who are mediating the talks. Trump acknowledged that Iran's leadership is "seriously fractured" and needs to present a unified proposal. The situation remains tense, with both sides prepared to resume fighting if a deal cannot be reached.
