SpaceX Stock Gains Amidst IPO Lockup Expirations and Starship Progress

Share:

SpaceX's stock experienced a rally this week, driven by a combination of positive developments and a crucial market event for investors. The company's shares saw a significant increase despite a massive lockup expiration on August 6, which made over 911 million shares, valued at approximately $116 billion, eligible for sale. This event, marking one of the largest post-IPO unlockings in market history, saw insider shares become available for trading shortly after the company's Q2 2026 earnings report on August 4.

While the expiration of lockup provisions can often lead to increased selling pressure and volatility, SpaceX shares managed to climb, closing at $114.92 on August 6, according to recent reports. This resilience suggests underlying investor confidence, with some analysts viewing the expiration as an opportunity for new investors to acquire shares at potentially more accessible price points. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, for instance, holds a positive outlook, believing the stock could reach $300 by mid-2027.

Adding to the positive sentiment is the ongoing progress with SpaceX's Starship program. The company is gearing up for Starship Flight 14, tentatively targeted for late August, which aims to achieve several key milestones, including reaching orbit, deploying operational Starlink V3 satellites, and attempting to catch the Starship upper stage with the launch tower. Analysts at UBS view these advancements as critical for enabling the ramp-up of SpaceX's connectivity and artificial intelligence businesses, which are considered the primary drivers of future growth.

Despite the positive momentum, investors remain keenly aware of the company's substantial investments in research and development, particularly in artificial intelligence and major projects. SpaceX reported a Q2 loss of $541 million on revenues of $7.8 billion, a nearly 90% increase year-over-year. While revenues are soaring, the company continues to pour significant capital into its ambitious long-term goals, a strategy that investors are closely monitoring as the stock navigates this pivotal period.
