SK Hynix has posted a landmark second quarter for 2026, announcing record revenue and operating profit figures. The South Korean semiconductor giant reported earnings on July 29, with its results significantly boosted by the ongoing demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, a critical component in artificial intelligence hardware.
The company's operating profit soared by an astounding 557% year-over-year, reaching 60.54 trillion Korean won (approximately $41.6 billion USD). Revenue also saw a substantial increase of 257% over the same period, hitting 79.32 trillion won. While these figures represent an all-time high for the company, they did fall slightly short of market expectations, with operating profit missing analyst forecasts.
Despite the slight miss on forecasts, the performance underscores SK Hynix's dominant position in the AI memory market. The company's CEO, Kwak Noh-jung, has previously stated that the demand for AI memory is so substantial that it is breaking the traditional boom-and-bust cycle of the semiconductor industry. SK Hynix has already sold out its entire 2026 memory lineup in advance, indicating a sustained period of high demand that is projected to continue through 2027 and potentially beyond.
The strong financial results are expected to reinforce SK Hynix's position as a key beneficiary of the global artificial intelligence investment cycle. Investors will be closely watching the company's outlook for the remainder of the year, particularly its strategies for meeting the escalating demand for HBM and its plans for production capacity expansion. The company's ability to navigate this period of unprecedented demand will be crucial for its continued success.
