Spencer Pratt, best known for his role on the reality TV show "The Hills," is making a surprisingly strong bid for mayor of Los Angeles. Pratt announced his candidacy in January 2026, challenging incumbent Karen Bass. Recent polls show him in second place, ahead of city council member Nithya Raman, though still behind Bass. Approximately 40% of voters remain undecided.
Pratt's campaign has focused on criticism of the city's handling of the 2025 Palisades wildfires, which destroyed his family's home. He has also released viral campaign ads targeting what he calls the wealthy lifestyles of established politicians. One ad contrasted his family's fire-ravaged property with the mansions of Mayor Bass and Councilmember Raman. Raman has criticized Pratt, calling him a "MAGA Republican" and a threat to Los Angeles.
Despite being a registered Republican, Pratt is running as an independent. His platform includes improving infrastructure and increasing funding for the LAPD. He has garnered attention and support, including an endorsement from Joe Rogan. Rogan, who relocated to Texas in 2020, stated that if he still lived in Los Angeles, he would "no question whatsoever" vote for Pratt. Pratt has raised nearly $540,000 since January, positioning himself as a legitimate contender.
