Meta Platforms is set to make a substantial entry into the Canadian market with the announcement of its first hyperscale data centre in Alberta. This development signifies a major investment in the country's technology landscape and is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits. The project, located in Sturgeon County, within the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, represents Meta's 33rd global data centre campus and its largest outside of the United States.
The initial investment is estimated at C$13 billion (approximately US$9.1 billion), with plans for up to three buildings. The facility is projected to have an initial power capacity of 1 gigawatt, with the potential to expand to 1.8 GW. This significant power requirement has led to a power purchase agreement with a new natural gas-fired power plant being constructed by a joint venture of Pembina Pipeline and Kineticor Asset Management, ensuring a dedicated energy supply for the data centre.
This strategic expansion into Canada is driven by Meta's increasing need for computing capacity to support its artificial intelligence ambitions and growing suite of social media applications, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The construction phase is expected to employ over 3,000 workers, with an additional 300 full-time positions to be created once the facility is operational. Meta has also committed C$60 million towards local infrastructure improvements, demonstrating a commitment to community development alongside its technological expansion. The move positions Meta to leverage Canada's robust energy infrastructure and growing tech talent pool as it continues to scale its global operations.
