Economist Warns Bitcoin to Zero, Cites 2008 Crisis

Share:

Nouriel Roubini, the economist renowned for accurately forecasting the 2008 global financial crisis, has issued a dire warning for Bitcoin, predicting it could eventually fall to zero. Known by the moniker "Dr. Doom" for his often pessimistic outlook, Roubini argues that cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, are a "pseudo-asset class" and a "bubble waiting to burst."

Roubini's latest critique, published in February 2026, highlights Bitcoin's significant price drops and volatility, which he contends undermines its narrative as a hedge against inflation or geopolitical risk. He points to Bitcoin's performance in 2025, where it declined by 6% while gold surged over 60% amid global turmoil, as evidence of this failure. This stark contrast, Roubini suggests, demonstrates that Bitcoin does not function as a reliable store of value or a safe haven asset.

The economist further criticizes the underlying utility of cryptocurrencies, stating they produce no income, offer no cash flows, and lack real economic utility. Roubini has previously labeled Bitcoin as a "Ponzi Game" and associated with criminal activity, asserting that its primary uses lie in speculation and illicit transactions. He also expressed concern that the increasing integration of crypto into traditional banking systems poses a broader risk to financial stability, particularly citing regulatory developments like the GENIUS Act.
