R Mason Thomas, the standout defensive end from the University of Oklahoma Sooners, is heading to the National Football League. The Kansas City Chiefs selected Thomas with the 40th overall pick during the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The announcement was made earlier today, marking a pivotal moment for the young athlete and the Oklahoma football program.
Thomas's journey to the NFL has been marked by impressive performances and resilience. During his time at Oklahoma, he showcased his skills as a dynamic and impactful player. In his junior year, he tied for fifth in the SEC with nine sacks, demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Despite facing a quad injury in his senior season, Thomas continued to make significant contributions, recording 26 tackles and 6.5 sacks. His collegiate career also included a memorable 71-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown against Tennessee.
The selection by the Chiefs marks a significant milestone, as Thomas is the first Sooner to be drafted this year. He joins a successful Chiefs franchise that has won three Super Bowls since 2019. The team's existing defensive line includes George Karlaftis and Ashton Gillotte, and Thomas is expected to compete for playing time and contribute to the team's defensive efforts.
