Apple has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI, alleging that the artificial intelligence firm and two former Apple employees have engaged in a coordinated effort to steal trade secrets. The lawsuit, filed in the U. S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claims these stolen proprietary materials are being used to accelerate OpenAI's consumer hardware development.
The tech giant asserts that former employees, including Tang Tan, OpenAI's chief hardware officer and ex-Apple VP of product design, and Chang Liu, a former Apple engineer, have misappropriated confidential information related to unreleased products, engineering processes, and manufacturing techniques. Apple claims that Tan encouraged job candidates to bring Apple hardware components and prototypes to interviews for "show and tell" sessions, while Liu allegedly exploited a security bug to download confidential engineering files after leaving the company. Apple stated it began investigating potential compromises of its confidential information and uncovered a "pattern of theft" by former employees now at OpenAI.
In response, OpenAI has issued a statement denying the allegations. Drew Pusateri, OpenAI's Director of Strategic Communications, stated, "We have no interest in other companies' trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere". This legal battle marks a significant escalation between two companies that were once partners, highlighting the intense competition and the high stakes involved in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. Apple is seeking damages and a court order to prevent OpenAI from using its alleged trade secrets.
